YWCA Alaska is excited to announce Barbara Swenson as our new CEO following the departure of Hilary Morgan in January. Barbara takes over for Shirley Pittz, who served as Interim CEO for the last four months.
Barbara joins YWCA Alaska with over 20 years of experience leading high-performance teams in a variety of industries. Her background includes 13 years with Hilton Hotels, where she managed teams of 25-150 in several US locations, including Chicago, New York, San Antonio and Anchorage. In 2006 Barbara joined Chenega Corporation and managed their three award-winning Anchorage hotel properties until they were sold in 2014. Her areas of expertise include strategic planning & workforce development, employee relations, and change management. She holds a B.A. in Sociology & Education from Susquehanna University, is a member on the Anchorage Chapter of the Society for Human Resource Management, and recently earned her SHRM-CP certification.

In addition to her professional experience, Barbara has dedicated years of service to several community organizations. She currently serves as the Community Services Chair for the Anchorage East Rotary Board, working closely with the Food Bank of Alaska as the Mobile Food Pantry Lead. Her past roles include both Secretary and Government Relations Co-Chair for the Visit Anchorage Board, and eight years with the Alaska Hotel & Lodging Association Board of Directors where she held several roles including Chairperson of the Board.
